The game

Your Johto. Your journey.

A familiar adventure, opened up. Explore the systems and small improvements behind GS Vitro’s new take on Johto.

01 / The details

A journey with room to wander

GS Vitro reimagines Johto around open-world progression. Routes have been reworked to remove many of the familiar roadblocks, giving you more freedom to decide where to go.

Start a new save in Free Mode to choose your starting place in Johto. You can take a different route through the region instead of following the same sequence every time.

That freedom comes with adaptive encounters. Wild Pokemon and trainers respond to your party’s level, while important trainers can have different teams. The system considers the kind of battle, and certain legendary encounters have fixed or minimum levels. It is not simply the same level applied to everything.

The aim is a comfortable, modern Johto adventure. GS Vitro is not designed around making every battle unusually difficult.

More possibilities for your team

An expanded roster brings a selection of Pokemon from later generations into Johto. Refreshed encounter lists also make better use of the region’s own Pokemon.

The announced plan includes more than 350 Pokemon obtainable through normal play, with additional encounters through mass outbreaks and the radio’s “Sounds of…” features. There are exceptions, including some legendary and Paradox Pokemon, so this is not a promise that every species can be caught.

New Mega Evolutions give selected Johto and Kanto Pokemon another form. Announced examples include Mega Meganium V, Mega Typhlosion V and Mega Feraligatr V. Their designs are distinct from their regular forms.

Some secondary trainers have varied teams, and common route items can vary too. Returning to Johto should leave room for surprises without losing the region you remember.

Keep your adventure moving

Field Moves replace traditional HMs, making exploration less dependent on filling your team’s movesets with utility moves. The world is built to support more freedom from the start.

Some moves also have extra uses outside battle. Rain Dance is one announced example of an overworld action available to certain Pokemon.

These changes are about making exploration feel natural. Exact move availability and any special conditions will be documented with the released game rather than assumed from the original Pokemon titles.

Familiar charm, fewer interruptions

The Pokegear gains practical tools, including encounter information and access to the PC. There is less time spent retracing your steps when you want to check your options or adjust your team.

Modern EXP sharing also reaches Pokemon stored in the PC. A quick-heal option helps look after your party, and turbo is available during battles.

The visual changes go beyond the towns. Important characters have refreshed designs, while Pokemon can have subtle individual color variations. The goal is a Johto that feels familiar and full of small discoveries.

Make this playthrough your own

Optional Permadeath (Nuzlocke) and Random modes are selected when starting the game. They offer different ways to approach the adventure; they are not requirements for a normal playthrough.

An announced offline trading system lets players exchange Pokemon by sharing a code, without a dedicated game server.

A Pokemon Showdown team exporter is also planned. It provides a way to take team information into Showdown; it does not mean GS Vitro has native online battles or that every custom form works in every Showdown format.

Final mode details and release-specific instructions will be confirmed when the game is available.

Johto comes first

The first release focuses on Johto. DS-inspired pixel scenery, refreshed environments and redesigned characters give its towns and paths a new atmosphere.

Kanto is planned as a later expansion. It is not part of the first-release promise, and no expansion date is announced here.

The features on this page describe the announced game. For the current release status and supported ways to play, visit Release & downloads.
